Meadowbrook Bird Sanctuary
Dear Neighbors: The Meadowbrook Bird Sanctuary was formed by concerned neighbors who wanted to restore the area to its natural state prior to the Township Sewer Project of 2001 - 2002.
Implementing A Plan: With the help of Rydal-Meadowbrook Civic Association, Abington Township Environmental Advisory Council and Abington Township, the property has evolved into a beautiful sanctuary that preserves this precious open space. Landscape architects volunteered to design a plan that would transform the area into a bird habitat with installation of an irrigation and water retention system, along with paths, feeders and plantings.
Progress to Date: Volunteers then planted over 30 trees, numerous flower beds and smaller plantings, strategically placed bird houses and benches for visitors to sit and enjoy this wonderful setting. Our efforts have been rewarded by receiving the prestigious Pennsylvania Horticultural Society 2003 Suburban Greening Award and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society 2004 Maintenance Award. We also received the Audubon Society Award in 2008, the Abington Township 2010 Robert Montgomery Award and the Pennsylvania House of Representatives Citation in Recognition of Preserving Open Space 2010. BUT OUR MISSION IS NOT COMPLETE! We need help to maintain with financial and physical participation by interested and concerned neighbors

NEWS LETTER
MAY - JUNE 2011
Thanks for stopping by.
LOST AND FOUND
A strange thing happened last month as I was walking through the property.
I spotted what looked like a child’s toy white bunny rabbit with long gray ears.
It was in the hedgerow along Washington Lane. When I bent to pick it up, to my surprise, it moved and ran under the tool shed. I coaxed it out but not before I sent an SOS to my friend BJ to bring her cat cage over. After a quick recovery the dear little bunny was on its way to the Glenside SPCA. We posted signs at MBS alerting “Heartsick Owners” where their pet could be found. The sad news is that no one claimed the lost bunny. The good news is: we are happy to report that there are loving families’s waiting in line to adopt the charming little bunny we named “Thumper”.
Accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative!

Meadowbrook Bird Sanctuary
Reflections of November 2010 Newsletter
Thanks for stopping by!
Recent studies have shown that the economic value of protected, open space, which Meadowbrook Bird Sanctuary is, increases home owner's property values by an average of $10,000 and maybe more in some areas. See reverse side for a statistics chart recently published in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Meadowbrook Bird Sanctuary should not be looked at as purely a luxury in your neighborhood or Township.
It is beneficial to you in so many and different ways.
Please invest in our future conservation work and the value of your community.

Huff, Puff I've flapped my wings for hours
A majestic creature
Wait, let me soar with you!
Keep flying, we'll get there

Have you visited the Children's Garden along Washington Lane, nestled in the hedgerow next to the Tool Shed?
Our friendly snake sculpture made its appearance there at the Meadowbrook Bird Sanctuary.
Can you guess what the snake is made of? ________________________________________

NEWS LETTER
Have we thanked you lately? We’re thrilled to welcome in the New Year with our list of old and new holiday supporters. A favorite poem seems appropriate here: “Make new friends but keep the old. The one is silver the other is gold” THANK YOU ALL. You are the unsung heroes.
CARDINAL POINTS
We want to expand the experiences for our MBS visitors with greater emphasis on creativity and capitalizing on the sanctuary’s little known assets such as the poison garden[what not to touch] and our new snake sculpture in the Children’s Garden. There is so much more to the sanctuary than just a walk-thru. Our MBS cheerleaders want to get you off the beaten path with new things yet to come.
Our friendly snake sculpture is in hibernation for the winter but don’t let that stop you from entering our “Name The Snake” contest. Send as many names as you want to ynys@comcast.net or P.O. Box 536, Huntingdon Valley, Pa. 19006 We will list them along with your name in next month’s news letter.
